A citation checklist for rewriting your draft

Separate quoted words from your explanation. Leave quotations exactly as they appear in the source, and revise the surrounding sentence instead. If a quotation needs an omission or clarification, follow the citation style required for your assignment.

Check author names, publication years, page numbers, and the corresponding bibliography entry. A polished sentence does not make an inaccurate reference correct.

Keep the citation close to the claim it supports. A revision that moves a citation to another sentence may accidentally attribute a different claim to the source.
